The Do’s & Don’ts of Sharing Your Business on Social Media

attraction marketing - social media prospecting

Have you ever had that constant, nagging thought in the back of your head that you MUST pitch your business to every sharp-looking prospect within arm's length?

  • Maybe walking the aisles at the grocery store...
  • Or sitting down to a nice dinner out with your family…
  • Or even on your honeymoon as you’re thinking about desperately pitching your products in the hot tub to the other honeymooners (true story...more on that later!)…

Or hey, how about this one...

Have you ever thought that you need to pack product samples in your back pocket so you're ALWAYS prepared to share your product, or else you won’t make any money in your business?

If you’re involved in ANY kind of networking, sales, or any other type of opportunity…you DO NOT want to miss out!

Especially if you don’t want to find yourself doing what I did…

Late one night in August, when I found myself stuffing samples of my company’s product into my suitcase, while I was packing for my honeymoon.

Yeah, I was that lady.

You see…

Eight years ago, I was a wide-eyed newbie to this whole industry...

And I thought, like maybe you’ve been taught…

That it’s just "all about the numbers."

That if you just expose enough people to your product and your business will catch momentum…and explode!

  • So I’d give out my card when dining out...
  • I'd give samples to my hairdresser and to the grocery clerk…
  • I’d send mass emails to my family and friends to invite them to my next sample party…

And I truly thought that if my husband Andrew and I were hanging out with another couple while in Aruba on our honeymoon, they would be the perfect fit for our products…

So I’d better bring samples with me!

Like I’m gonna pull them out of my bikini as we’re all hanging out by the hot tub, lol!

Let’s just say, yes, I did hand out samples on our honeymoon...

And did I sign anyone up?

Nope.

Were there moments of our honeymoon where I was solely focused on prospecting rather than enjoying time with my new husband?

Yup.

That’s when it hit me, and I’m sure you’ve felt this way too…

I didn’t get into this business to constantly push product!

endless pitching decreased

I wanted a business where I could enjoy more time with my family, go on more trips, and take my family out to dinner, and focus on them.

It wasn’t until I figured out that this really isn’t just a numbers game…

That's it's more about learning how to truly identify who would be the PERFECT fit to buy my products, join my team, and leverage my time using social media…

That’s when I stopped packing samples and started running my business in completely different way.

And oddly enough…

As my endless pitching decreased my bank account increased!

So what should you do and what shouldn’t you do to build your home business online?

Well, let’s start with what you shouldn’t do so we set ourselves up right.

Sound good?

DON'T #1: Send Unsolicited Links

Have you ever heard the doorbell ring and when you open the door it’s someone trying to sell you something?

And when you’ve said “No thank you, I’m not interested” (for the third time), they continue to keep pitching you?

Yeah nobody likes that, especially on social media.

Social media is all about being SOCIAL!

No one is looking to be sold to on social media (even though a lot of people will buy, if you do it right).

So if you send a message to someone with a link pitching them your opportunity, or post something about your business by plastering a link up on your Facebook wall…

...don’t be surprised if people don’t buy what you’re selling (and even if you get some nasty responses too).

DON'T #2: Lead with Your Wallet

Humans naturally think about themselves first.

So when you start up a business that you’re incredibly passionate about, you want to share it with everyone, right?

It makes perfect sense, because you’re passionate about what you’re doing, and you know what you're doing can help others (including yourself).

So what do most people do?

Well, most people lead with their wallet, which means, plain and simple…

Pitch, pitch, pitch...with the end result in mind (filling up their wallet).

You may not even realize you’re doing it initially (I sure didn’t), but if you look back it’ll become clear that some of your initial posts (unless you were taught by someone who’s already seen success) are centered solely around YOUR business and why people should join/buy YOUR products…

…without you ever learning if who you’re targeting would actually benefit.

If you’ve done either of these methods before… don’t freak out!

I’ve been there too, but when I learned what actually worked, everything changed.

So here’s where to start with what you should DO instead...

social media prospecting

DO #1: Revolve Your World Around Them

You may already feel like you’re posting and sharing information with other people’s best interests in mind, but I can assure that if each post and video that you have end with you posting your opportunity link or telling people to “join you”…

Then you’re not.

The really effective marketers and business owners revolve everything they do around solving other people’s problems.

The first thing you have to do is figure out WHO you need to target that would essentially benefit from your products.

And then, once you’ve identified the hottest prospects who would truly stand to benefit from your products and services, then it's time to…

DO #2: Lead With Value

People love to buy from others they know, like, and trust.

The best way to actually sell more stuff is to produce more valuable content and trainings more than you pitch your products.

Make a list of what topics, problems, and trainings people would want that are in alignment with what product or service you sell, and provide valuable education first.

Now, you may not feel like you’re making steps forward to close sales…

But here’s what leading with value first will do:

  • Opens the door to start a conversation with potential prospects
  • Sets you up as an authority in your niche
  • Makes you stand out from the majority (who are desperately pitching just to close a sale)
  • Gives you long term customers that love you
  • Creates a following of people that see you as a leader and will come to you when they have problems

So instead of following the herd of home business owners out there who are stuffing samples into their pockets with hopes of closing a sale…

Start working smarter and start building your business the right way on social media today...
